在本专栏中，我会选取英文写作当中常见的同义替换进行讲解，所讲解的词汇表达为通用词汇或者话题词汇。英语写作中高级同义词替换的数量很多，这里每组仅挑选几个较为常见的。
contribute to、play a part、be a factorcontribute to表示是…的原因之一，与result in/lead to(导致)在意思上是有区别的：
①Television often gets blamed for contributing to the decline of family life.电视经常被指责导致是家庭生活质量降低的原因之一。
②No one knows exactly what causes the disease. Genetic factors are thought to play a part.没有人知道到底是什么导致了该疾病。基因因素被认为是其中一个原因。
play a part后面经常会加上in sth。当语义在语境中非常清晰时，就没有必要加上状语in sth，比如这句话中part后面加上in it就会显得画蛇添足。
③Parents' influence is a major factor in a child's progress in school.父母的影响是孩子在学校进步的一个主要因素。supersede/supplant、substitute、make way for/give way to①supersede/supplant通常表示新的、更先进的事物替代旧事物：Older workers are being supplanted by recent college graduates.年级更大的工作者正在被刚毕业的大学生所替代。②substitute有两个意思：以...取代；代替。两个意思的动作宾语分别为取代物和被取代物：
1) Factories can substitute green energy for fossil fuels.工场可以用清洁能源代替化石燃料。【substitute A for B=use A in place of B用A代替B】
2) Factories can substitute fossil fuels with/by green energy.【substitute A with B=replace A with B用B代替A】
③make way for/give way to表示被...替代：
Several houses were torn down to make way for the shopping center.好几个房子被拆掉，取而代之的是购物中心。3 向...转变(change from...to...）switch to、shift、go over to①switch to sth经常用来表示转而使用....
Switching to renewables may be the key to tackling environmental issues.转而使用可再生能源是解决环境问题的关键。
②shift可以表示态度、观点、方式的转变。后面也可以接to sth，表示向...转变。
Public attitudes towards marriage have shifted over the last decade.大众对于婚姻的态度在过去10年有所变化。
switch和shift都可以作名词，表示向...的转变，分别用作switch to sth、shift towards sth。1) A switch to renewables may be the key to tackling environmental issues.2) Recent years have seen a shift towards remote working.近些年，工作模式在向远程办公转变。The school went over to a mixed-ability teaching three years ago.这所学校三年前改为了混合能力教学。
4 极大地改变(change sth dramatically)
transform/revolutionize、overhaul
①transform和revolutionize表示极大地改变。
Advances in technology have transformed/revolutionized people‘s lifestyles.科技进步改变了人们的生活方式。
②overhaul表示彻底改变某事使其更好，宾语通常为体系。
Lawmakers are overhauling the welfare program.立法者正在对福利计划进行全面改革。
enhance、ameliorate、refine、modify
①enhance和improve意思用法几乎相同，写作中几乎可以替换。
Measures should be taken to enhance residents' quality of life.应该采取措施改善居民的生活质量。
②ameliorate的宾语通常是不好的事物或情况。
These policies are designed to ameliorate structural unemployment.这些政策旨在改善结构性失业问题。
②modify和refine意思差不多，都是作出较小的改变以改善事物。This course is meant to help students refine their reading skills.该课程旨在帮助学生提升阅读技能。
Patients are taught how to modify their diet.病人获得有关如何调节饮食的指导。
