诺贝尔文学奖颁奖词英文版介绍

penetration在这里表示理解，洞察。penetration of sth就类似于写作中更常用的understanding of sth、insight into sth。

gulf表示隔阂；鸿沟，相当于gap。gulf between cultures and continents这个成分很容易理解成cultures和continents之间的鸿沟。这样理解就错了。cultures和continents不是同类或对立的事物，不能作为between A and B中的A和B。
实际上，the gulf between cultures and continents就相当于the gulf between cultures and between continents。between后面并不是只能接A and B，也可以是可数名词复数，即多个事物之间。the gulf between cultures and continents就是不同文化之间、不同洲之间的鸿沟。
