在英文写作当中，涉及到观点论证的部分经常需要举例。一般来说，对于同一个论点举一个例子就够了，但是如果篇幅较长，需要举两个例子的话，那么两个例子之间该怎样进行衔接呢？
下面这段当中就给出了一个很常见的句型：Sth is not alone. 其中sth是上文提到的例子，接下来要引出其他例子。这个句型所起的作用就是承上启下。这句话可以理解为中文中的“无独有偶”。
①But in a year marked by lockdowns and working from home, gaming revenue instead grew by 11.5% year-on-year as housebound consumers reached for their controllers. ②Sony is not alone. ③Microsoft, its gaming arch-rival, released its own results the day before.但是在以隔li和在家工作为特色的一年中，游戏的收入反而同比增长了11.5%，因为待在家里的消费者要购买游戏控制器。并非只有索尼出现这种增长。索尼在游戏领域的主要竞争对手微软于前一天公布了其销售数据。
④Its Xbox One console is similarly superannuated, yet revenues jumped by 30%.微软的Xbox One游戏机同样是过时的产品，但是其收入突增了30%。
2 on the plus/minus side
在英文写作当中经常需要写到事物的利弊或好坏处。那么在写利弊或好坏处的时候，有没有什么简洁的表达可以直接引出好处或者坏处呢？
与plus相反的词就是minus。on the minus side就是“坏的一面是”。
在on the plus side前面还有一句话：There is good news and bad news for those who believe that managers matter.(对于认为管理者重要的人来说，既有好听的话，也有不好听的话)。这句话就相当于这两段的中心句。第二段用了however一词进行转折，引出相反的一面，即缺点。
3 At one extreme,...At the other end of the spectrum,
在表示相反的事物或观点时，我们就经常会用到on the one hand...on the other (hand)。除此之外，还有没有其他地道的句型呢？
由these optimists可以推测出来，at the sanguine end of the spectrum中的sanguine就相当于optimistic乐观的。sanguine在这里也可以去掉，变成at the other end of the spectrum。
spectrum在这里表示的不是光谱，而是所有不同的观点或事物(a complete range of opinions, people, situations etc, going from one extreme to its opposite)。
在写作中用这个表达表示不同观点时，还可以在At one extreme前面再加上一句话作为中心句：Opinions on sth are deeply polarised.关于...的有完全不同的观点。
与上面讲的Opinions on sth are deeply polarised.类似，at the gentle end of the spectrum前面的A range of policies could accelerate this shift.就是统领下文的中心句。
在写作中，如果词汇量较高，能想到两个相反的形容词来概况两种不同的事物/观点，就可以对At one extreme,...At the other end of the spectrum这个句型进行改写，改写方法参考上面两个例子；如果词汇量较低的话，就直接用原句型，也是非常地道的。
