外刊中的写作表达方式

在本专栏当中，我会从近期的外刊中精选一些地道的表达和句型进行精讲。所选取的外刊中的写作表达方式一般都是一些可以用于各类话题的通用表达或者常用表达。

render一词在很多词汇书上给出了导致，致使的意思，但是很多同学只知道背中文意思，在写作当中并没有想过如何使用这个词。如果能在作文当中正确使用这个词，阅卷老师定会眼前一亮。

这个词在外刊当中出现的频率还是挺高的，比如下面这段关于食品包装的描述：

There must be a barrier between contents and containers, and this is usually made of plastic. Such plastic inserts often render containers non-recyclable.食品和包装罐之间必须要有一层东西，而这通常是塑料制的。这种塑料插入物通常使得包装罐无法被回收再利用。

比如人工智能的发展使得很多工作不复存在了：

再比如下面关于互联网发展对市场影响的几句话：

Google maps has rendered useless the likes of London's A-Z.谷歌地图使伦敦纸质地图这些传统地图不再有用。

London's A-Z是伦敦纸质城市地图的名称。

在这句话中出现了宾语后置的现象，原语序应该为Google maps has rendered the likes of London's A-Z useless。有时为了避免头重脚轻，会将宾语放到补语之后，比如下面这句话当中的make possible：

 , helping make possible the fortunes generated by firms like Google and Facebook.有助于使谷歌和脸书等公司产生的财富变得可能。

对于translate，绝大多数同学可能只知道其表示“翻译”的意思，但是translate还有两个非常常见的写作用法：

①to cause a particular situation or result导致，带来(某一特定的结果)

比如下面这段关于服务业与传统制造业的比较：

That usually translates into higher salaries for their employees.这通常会造成服务业公司员工的工资比制造业工人们更高。(that指代前面一句的more productive这一事实)

②to change something into a new form, especially to turn a plan into something real 使转变。通常表示将理论转化为实际。

比如下面一段关于医学实验竞争的描述：

The race this work sparked to translate the idea into something useful to humans, however, raises issues. 然而，由这一研究引发的将该理论转化为真正造福人类的东西的竞争引发了一些问题。

The race ①[this work sparked] ②[to translate the idea into something useful to humans]

在这句话中，the idea就是理论；something useful to humans就是实际效果。

在写作当中写到将某一理论/计划转化为实际行动，就可以用到translate A into B结构。

其中有这样一句话：

我们再来看一下这篇文章的第一段

其中的Denver's success in attracting talented, well-educated young people from across America很明显与上面那句话The city is a magnet for those who acquire skills elsewhere是同义替换。

再根据magnet的本义，不难推测出，magnet在这里表示有吸引力的事物，be a magnet for与attract意思差不多。

California remains a magnet for highly educated migrants.加州对于受教育程度很高的外来打工者依然具有很强的吸引力。

Big cities are a magnet for young people seeking job opportunites and better prospects.
